Willamette Valley 30K Walk 'n Relay 2009

July 18, 2009
Alton Baker Park, Eugene, OR

Competitive and "Walk Our Way" 30K - for individuals or teams

Recap:

Willamette Valley 30K Walk n' Relay and 10K -

More than a walk in the park!

On Saturday, July 18th, walkers and runners from all over the

northwest met at Alton Baker Park in Eugene, OR for another

successful event organized by Wonders of Walking.  This was the

second year for the Willamette Valley 30K Walk n' Relay and the third year for the 10K.  Both events upheld the standards of quality, care

and enthusiasm one can expect from WOW.  A family 5K (or less) was also held in conjunction with the Lane Coalition for Healthy Active Youth, whose goal is to promote exercise for children and the family.

The event was kicked off by Mayor Kitty Piercy, offering participants words of encouragement before they hit the trails. Rich Glouber sang

fun songs for the kids, helping them stretch and get ready for their big adventure!

The “hub” of the relay was filled with rockin music from Rich Glouber

and a host of vendors to provide food, coffee, drinks, massage and information to participants.  WOW would like to thank the following for their support:

Not only is WOW focused on the health, fitness, and encouraging people to become strong advocates for their own well being through walking, this event was also a fully “green” event.  For the second year, the Willamette Valley event was recognized by Runner’s World Magazine as one of the top 29 events in this category. WOW had recycling and composting on site, bulk water refills, all collateral printed on 100% post consumer waste with soy inks, no place race bags and medals made of both recycled glass (for 30K and 10K participants) and wood cookie medals for the kids.

A portion of the proceeds from this event go to Lane Coalition for Healthy Active Youth (LCHAY) whose mission is to prevent childhood obesity and related diseases by mobilizing the community to adopt active lifestyles and healthful nutrition. LCHAY convenes, connects and collaborates with concerned citizens and representatives from dozens of area programs, organizations and agencies to improve child health and wellness; improving access and creating opportunities for better nutrition and enhanced physical activity environments.

The next Wonders of Walking event is the Sisters Stride into Autumn on Saturday, September 20th. This 10K or 15K offers participants the experience of walking through the tranquil and scenic views of the Deschutes National Forest.  For more information about this event, to register AND to read about the special offer to receive a discount on your registration, visit http://wondersofwalking.org/event_sisters.php

"I want to thank you and the committee of WOW for a wonderful event on Saturday !  It was so much fun and great comraderie.  Our teams enjoyed working together to complete the 6 x 5Ks. We all agreed that next year is a must for us; and we plan to bring along others too!!"

-Margaret M.

"BEAUTIFUL course!! Wow, nothing better than an early morning, cool (but not cold) walk on the paths of a beautiful park, by the river...Quite nice!"

-Kim M.

"Thank you so very much for organizing a great race!  I think it's the best solution you could have come up with after the Willamette Valley Relay.  It was really FUN!  The scenery was fantastic and it was so nice to see other racers so much of the time.  It definitely accommodates all level of participants with the options available.  I especially liked loop #4 with passing by the rose garden."

-Darlene Backlund

"Congrats on another wonderful event Judy.  Had a great time and I really enjoyed the way it was run vs walking out on the road.  Felt safer and your volenteers were very supportive and helpful.  Thank you again and rest up."

-Cheryl R.
