Hi,
Welcome new subscribers and returning readers. I hope your first quarter of 2011 is off to a good start. The WOW Walk Club hosted by REI Portland celebrated five years on March 26th. It was a great day for a walk. A big thank you for the support from Friends of WOW: Clearwater Clinic and Walk About Magazine; members were eligible to win almost $600 in services, gift cards, and subscriptions for this celebration. Come join us on any Saturday at 9:00 am.
March was a great learning month for me. I took a continuing education workshop offered by ACE (American Council on Exercise) Functional Training and Assessments workshop. Walking is defined as the default movement pattern. Success with walking (and running) and all forms of physical training should lead to improvements in
the ability to perform the default movement---walking (gait). In other words, it is all about walking; and, as many of you know, there is no such think as 'just walking'.
I also journey to Cleveland, OH for a monthly session with Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn on Preventing and Reversing Heart Disease. It was a captivating 5 hours of how we develop heart disease.
There was a mix of health professionals, people with newly diagnosed heart disease, people with Type-2 diabetes, high cholesterol, elevated weight and/or hypertension who were ready to make major lifestyle changes to avoid surgical interventions & pharmaceuticals. Patients of Dr. E have accomplished reversing heart disease in making a lifestyle change of eating high fiber, low (no added fats),
whole plant based foods. This approach applies to the diseases associated with the Western or Standard American Diet (SAD).
